Professor of the Military Medical Academy Vadim Alekseevich Kornilov, known to surgical community as the originator of the classification of acute ischaemia in lesions of major arteries of the limbs, dedicated his whole life to studying the problems related to vascular lesions. By his numerous works in this field he laid the foundation of modern "vascular traumatology" – a science of vascular lesions, as he called it. The article gives a detailed description of V.A. Kornilov’s contribution to modern vascular surgery, followed by duly evaluating his studies based on treatment of more than 900 injuries to major vessels of extremities. Many of the proposed, yet unrealized earlier and underappreciated approaches to treatment of a vascular wound, may be used by future generations of surgeons.

KEY WORDS: history of medicine, history of surgery, vascular traumatology, vascular injury, acute ischaemia.
